The Iditarod starts in Anchorage on Saturday,
March 3. fans call it the last great race
on earth. A race over 1,150 miles of the
world's most extreme and beautiful terrain:
across mountain ranges, frozen rivers, dense
forests, desolate tundra and arctic coastline.
Wednesday: Arrive and overnight
in Anchorage.
Thursday: Board the Alaska
Railroad Hurricane Turn Train for a trip into
Alaska's Interior. The train travels north
from Anchorage to Hurricane gulch, along the
Susitna River and through the Indian River
canyon. On this wilderness run, you can
get off the train anywhere along the way, and
stop the train on the return with a wave of a
flag. The Hurricane Turn operates on the
first Thursday of each month during the winter.
Return to hotel in Anchorage.
Friday: Head to the Fur Rondy, an
Anchorage family tradition dating back to the
days when fur trappers wanted to blow off a
little steam during the middle of winter.
Now, it's a full-blown winter celebration with
sled dog
races, snow sculpture, exhibits, car racing and
a parade. Overnight in Anchorage.
Saturday: The Iditarod Sled Dog
Race is within walking distance of your hotel.
After the last musher leaves the chute, plan to
visit the Alaska Native Heritage Museum.
return to hotel for overnight in Anchorage.
Sunday:
Fly home or opt for more activities in
the Anchorage area. The Official Iditarod
Re-start is as much fun as the Ceremonial Start
and provides more chances to see the mushers
up-close.

Fairbanks, Alaska, Feb. 27 - Mar. 26, finished
sculptures: Mar. 10-26
Saturday: Board
the Aurora Winter Train in Anchorage at 8:30 am
and overnight in Fairbanks.
Sunday:
view the magical creations of the world's
best ice artists - showcasing more than 180
sculptures. Take the train north and fly
back on Alaska Airlines, or fly to Fairbanks and
return to Anchorage by train. Three
ice-sculpting competitions take place during an
11-day period from February 28 - March 10.
Note: Admission to Ice Art Festival - Adults $8,
children $4.
